I change the oil on my Mercedes that way, the filter is a canister type that you change from under the hood, so you can do the whole without getting under the car. I've used the vacuum sucker on my truck as well, works fine but you have to get under the truck to change the filter anyway so it ends up taking more time. I find the DIY oil change to be a piece of cake with my E92. And, frankly, even if you can do a topside oil change, I personally believe you're better off with a traditional oil change. There's the possibility of muck accumulating in the pan that you wouldn't get out topside that may just drain out when drained from the bottom.
