Price charts often have blank spaces known as gaps, which represent times when no shares were traded within a particular price range. Normally this occurs between the close of the market on one day and the next day's open. Gap (chart pattern) A gap is defined as an unfilled space or interval. On a technical analysis chart, a gap represents an area where no trading takes place. On the Japanese candlestick chart, a window is interpreted as a gap. In an upward trend, a gap is produced when the highest price of one day is lower than the lowest price of the following day. Gaps are areas on a chart where the price of a stock (or another financial instrument) moves sharply up or down, with little or no trading in between. As a result, the asset's chart shows a gap in the normal price pattern. The enterprising trader can interpret and exploit these gaps for profit. If you look on the right hand graph you can see a massive gap between the last two bars; this is a chart gap. A gap is simply where two candles/wicks do not cross and if you think about it, this will occur if there is a big move in a stock when it opens for trading.
